Valley Psychological Services, P.C. is located next to one of it's best partners Doctor's Hospital at Renaissance. VPS had its genesis in the partnership of Dr. Joseph McCoy (licensed psychologist) with Drs. Matt Johnson and Steve Havener (family physicians) to create an environment that allowed for collaborative care for the primary care patient. This partnership was facilitated by the board of Mission Hospital in 1999 to improve the range of services provided to the Mission community. |Dr. Joseph McCoy, Ph.D. is a graduate of the Medical Psychology Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, one of the nation's top 10 medical research institutions (when measured by the amount of annual research grant monies received). As a Licensed psychologist he has a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from UAB. Psychologists have the most in-depth training in mental health care of any of the mental health providers. |Mr. Gary Leka, M.A., LPA is a Licensed Psychological Associate who graduated from the University of Texas Pan American with a Masters of Arts in Clinical Psychology. As a supervised clinician at Valley Psychological Services he provides psychological evaluations for all age ranges under the supervision of Dr. Joseph McCoy. He has completed all requirements of his doctorate but it has not been conferred: We congratulate him on this and will soon call him Dr. Leka!|
|Ms. Delia Villarreal, M.A., LPA is a Licensed Psychological Associate who graduated from the University of Texas Pan American with a Masters of Arts in Clinical Psychology. As a supervised clinician at Valley Psychological Services she provides bilingual services for all age ranges. Ms. Villarreal provides individual and family therapy, as well as psychological evaluations under the supervision of Dr. Joseph McCoy.|

|Dr. Monica Hernandez is a licensed psychologist who graduate with a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Walden University and is a graduate from the Lone Star Psychology Residency Consortium post-doctoral residency program. Her focus as a consultant with VPS is to provide psychological evaluations of all types spanning the age range. She performs evaluations for learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, DARS, general psychological evals, adaptive behavior among others. She too is bilingual and a Valley native.|
|Dr. Alfonso Mercado, originally from Los Angeles, California, currently provides psychological services to children, adolescents, and adults including individual therapy, specialized group therapies, and conducts psychological evaluations. Dr. Mercado received his BS and MS degrees in psychology at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, California. Dr. Mercado completed his doctoral academic studies at Fielding Graduate University, an APA accredited program, receiving a PhD in Clinical Psychology and completed his pre-doctoral internship at the Multicultural Psychology Internship Program of Massachusetts and his postdoctoral fellowship at Valley Psychological Services. His current research interests focus on Latino mental health, clinical treatment outcome studies, and multicultural interventions. He is a Licensed Psychologist in Texas. In addition to his professional career, Dr. Mercado also serves his community in several capacities. He is an active member of the Texas Psychological Association where he serves as the Diversity Division Co-Chair, member of the American Psychological Association, and is a board member at two different non-profit organizations.|
|Mr. Russell Armstrong, M.S., LPC is a Licensed Professional Counselor who provides services in English primarily for adolescents, adults who suffer from depression, bipolar, and divorce. He received his Master of Arts in Rehabilitative Counseling from UTPA 2009. He also provides family and marital counseling. At a separate location he provides Equine Facilitated Counseling. |Ms. Marilyn Joy Ramirez, M. Ed., LPC is based in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. Called to serve the community-at-large for over three decades in the educational forum, teaching kinder to college, including both teacher and counselor training. Educated in Mexico, Michigan, Washington State, England, Israel and finally, in Edinburg, Texas, where I completed graduate and post-graduate programs in applied linguistics, in reading for diagnostic/prescriptive purposes in pedagogy, and in counseling and guidance, followed by licensure as a professional counselor with play therapy training in Denton, Texas.

|Ms. Kim Nguyen-Finn, M.A., LPC-S has over 16 years of experience as a mental health counselor and Texas Licensed Professional Counselor Board-approved Supervisor. Aside from providing individual, family, and couples counseling for a wide range of issues, including anxiety disorders, OCD, depression, trauma resolution, and gender identity, she is a lecturer at UT-Pan American in Rehabilitation Services. Prior to joining VPS, she was a supervising clinical therapist at UTPA for over 15 years. Ms. Finn was raised in a military household and earned her Masterís of Arts in Educational Psychology from the University of Texas at San Antonio, before moving to the Valley as soon as she could.|
|Mr. Joseph Garcia, M.S., LPC is a graduate of the University of Texas Pan American and currently pursuing a doctorate in clinical psychology. As a clinician through the local mental health authority, Joseph provides counseling to a diverse clientele while promoting education and awareness of mental health disorders to the community. His training and practice has prepared him for crisis counseling, including debriefing and stress management. Having practiced at both the in and out patient levels of care, Joseph understands the various degrees of severity regarding depressive disorders, anxiety disorders as well as other mental illnesses and substance abuse disorders. Though heavily focused on cognitive behavioral therapy, Joseph utilizes multiple approaches to psychotherapy for optimal results.|
